Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 are two fat-soluble vitamins that work closely together in calcium metabolism. What is Vitamin D3+K2

Vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is the form of vitamin D naturally produced in the skin upon sun exposure and found in animal-based foods such as oily fish and egg yolk. It is converted in the liver and kidneys into its active form, which regulates how much calcium and phosphorus the body absorbs from food. Vitamin K2, or menaquinone, is structurally related to vitamin K1 but is used differently in the body. Because these two vitamins act at different points of the same calcium pathway, vitamin D increasing calcium absorption and vitamin K2 supporting its use in bone, they are often combined in a single product. This combination is particularly relevant during autumn and winter months, when skin synthesis of vitamin D from sunlight is reduced at higher latitudes, and for people who consume little vitamin K2 from fermented or animal-based foods.

How does Vitamin D3+K2 work

Vitamin D increases the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphorus and helps maintain normal blood calcium concentrations, which supports the mineralisation of bone and teeth. It also contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the maintenance of normal muscle function, both established roles recognised by European health authorities.

Vitamin K2 works through a different mechanism. It is required to activate osteocalcin, a protein produced by bone-forming cells that binds calcium into the bone matrix. Without sufficient vitamin K, osteocalcin remains in an inactive form and calcium is less effectively incorporated into bone tissue. Vitamin K also contributes to normal blood clotting, an established function shared by all forms of vitamin K.

Some observational and mechanistic studies suggest that vitamin K2 may also support the activation of matrix Gla protein, a protein involved in preventing calcium deposits in soft tissue such as blood vessels. This area of research is still developing, and a direct cause and effect relationship between vitamin K2 intake and cardiovascular function has not been established by European regulators, so this should be regarded as a preliminary rather than confirmed benefit.
