What is clomiphene citrate?

Clomiphene citrate is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) originally developed in the 1960s to treat female infertility.

It acts on the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, stimulating the release of gonadotropins — luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

In medicine, clomiphene is used to induce ovulation in women and improve sperm production in men with low fertility.

In sports, it is commonly used during post-cycle therapy (PCT) to help restore natural testosterone levels after anabolic steroid use, preventing fatigue, muscle loss, and hormonal imbalance.

Main effects of clomiphene citrate

💪 Stimulates natural testosterone production in men

🧬 Increases luteinizing (LH) and follicle-stimulating (FSH) hormones

🩸 Supports spermatogenesis and fertility

🌿 Restores hormonal balance after anabolic cycles (PCT)

🔥 Prevents muscle loss and hypogonadism symptoms

👩‍🦰 Induces ovulation in women with anovulatory cycles

⚖️ Improves estrogen-to-testosterone ratio

How to take clomiphene citrate

Post-cycle therapy (PCT)

  • Dosage: 25–50 mg daily
  • Duration: 4–6 weeks, depending on the previous anabolic cycle
  • Purpose: to reactivate LH and FSH release and normalize testosterone levels
  • Often combined with tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors for stronger recovery effect

Male hypogonadism

  • Dosage: 25–50 mg daily or every other day
  • Continuous use helps maintain testosterone production without suppressing the body’s own hormonal axis

Female fertility support

  • Dosage: 50 mg daily for 5 days
  • Start: on the 5th day of the menstrual cycle
  • If ovulation does not occur, the dose can be gradually increased (up to 100 mg/day max)

Possible side effects

  • Hot flashes or sweating
  • Mild abdominal discomfort or bloating
  • Headaches or mood swings
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea or dizziness
  • Temporary blurred vision or visual flashes (rare)

Less common effects:

  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Thromboembolic events (very rare)
  • Gynecomastia in men (due to altered estrogen feedback)
  • Ovarian hyperstimulation in women (requires immediate medical attention)

How to store

  • Keep at 20–25 °C (68–77 °F)
  • Store in a dry, dark place away from moisture
  • Do not expose to sunlight
  • Keep in the original packaging to protect from air and humidity

How does clomiphene citrate work?

Clomiphene binds to estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, blocking the normal feedback signal that limits the release of gonadotropins.

As a result, the hypothalamus increases the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which in turn stimulates the pituitary gland to produce more LH and FSH.

  • In men, LH activates Leydig cells in the testes, boosting testosterone synthesis, while FSH supports sperm production.
  • In women, FSH promotes follicle growth, and LH triggers ovulation.

This dual effect on the reproductive axis makes clomiphene a versatile agent — equally effective for testosterone recovery, fertility improvement, and hormonal regulation after anabolic cycles.
